University Challenge: Edinburgh vs. Regent’s Park

December 17, 2009

This week saw a second-round match between Uni of Edinburgh and Regent’s Park College, Oxford. Paxman’s introductions to this series’ programmes are growing ever more puntastic.

What started out looking like a massacre, with Regent’s Park 20 to 105 behind about a third of the way in, ended up an incredibly close call, with Regent’s Park pulling level, then ahead, only to be pipped to the post at the last minute by a resurgent Edinburgh. The final score was 170 to 150.

I scored a back-to-form 270, 235 without unstarted bonuses, including 16 starters, three of which neither of the teams got. Kept up my good record on Renaissance tragedy questions by correctly identifying the source of “But that was in another country, and besides, the wench is dead” (The Jew of Malta). Also correctly got ‘PostSecret’ on the “blogs which have been turned into books” round.

Proof that the world is indeed slowly going mad was provided by the presence of a question asking “The website shows humorous and grammatically idiosyncratic captions attached to pictures of which animal?”

Why did I even ask? Think I forgot which demographic the contestants on this particular show are drawn from.
