University Challenge: York vs. St George’s

October 1, 2009

Tonight I finally got round to watching Monday’s University Challenge, this week contested between the University of York and St George’s College, London (a medical college). The result was a sound thrashing for York, beaten by St George’s 200 to 55.

I scored a gratifying 210. Following the suggestion that I discount any bonus questions to which I didn’t also know the starter answer (in order to level the playing field with the teams), that reduces to a still-gratifying 190, 140 points of which came in starters.

I was a little annoyed by the music round, which required you to identify both the famous piece of music and the TV show to which it had been used as a theme: I recognised both Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre and Carl Orff’s O Fortuna but had not a clue that they are the themes to, respectively, Jonathan Creek and The X Factor.
